Alexander's visit to the kingdom of Porus. The medieval testimony

The paper focuses on the campaign of Alexander the Great in Porus’ kingdom, as presented in medieval manuscripts. The narration of the campaign by Arian focuses on the battle that took place in one of the tributaries of Indus, the Hydaspes, in which Alexander defeated the Indian king Porus with his army of 200 of elephants. The encounter of Alexander with the Porus’s army of elephants has been depicted in ancient coinage in the area of Babylon, with the famous Porus coins produced in 323BC in Babylon, but it has been a subject of medieval illuminations as well, Greek, Latin, Serbian, Russian, Persian etc.

A big part of the medieval iconography focuses also on the encounters of Alexander with the naked philosophers and his visit to sacred places, like the Temple of Sun and Moon. Special reference on this topics is given to the famous Codex 5 of the Hellenic Institute for Byzantine and Postbyzantine Studies of Venice, entitled: ’An excellent and truly wonderful account about the ruler of the world Alexander the King’, which consists an extremely rich in terms of illuminations manuscript dated to the second half of the 14th c. that belonged to the personal library of the byzantine Emperor Alexios III of Trebizond (1349-1390) in the 14th century. This paper focuses on Codex 5, as an extremely valuable source of information on Alexander’s campaign to this geographical area.
